All messages > Using a CD-Writer for backups
Requirements
1. Direct Access CD-Writer Software such as Adaptec/Roxio Direct CD, Veritas Drive Letter Access, Nero. This allows you to copy files directly to a CD within windows or another program (like ecopy). Most CD-Writers come with one of the above software packages free.
2. ecopy installed on the same computer as the CD-Writer.

How to test your CD-Writer
Within Windows Explorer, select and copy a small file (from the Edit menu). Again within Windows Explorer, paste the file onto your CD-Writer drive. Double Click the CD-drive to confirm you file now appears on the CD.

How to use the CD-Writer in your backup
In ecopy backup, Click Options then Change Backup Settings
Click the Files and Folders Section
Click Add
Follow the Add Wizard's prompts
When prompted for a target drive, selected your CD-Writer.

Recommendations
Any CDR disk can be formatted for use with direct access software. However formatting can take a long time for some versions of the software. To avoid this, buy the CDR Disk preformatted for your software...it will save you hours!

Note if you have trouble selecting the CD-Writer as the target in ecopy, create a small text file on the CD from within Windows. Some versions of the Direct Access software won't show the drive as available unless its been written to already, or actually have a small file on it.
